More details of BMW’s long awaited 8 series model tier continue to trickle down. BMW has released images of the M850i xDrive being tested in Wales under real world driving conditions. The tests in Wales are meant to put the engine and suspension components through their paces.
The new M850i features a newly developed twin turbo charged V8 engine generating 390 kw(530 hp)of power and 750 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to BMW’s 8 speed steptronic transmission which then redistributes the power to all wheels. There is an active differential in the rear to help the large car have optimum handling dynamics on a back roads or even the race track where the development team is sure some owners may want to take their 8 series. To help mask the cars size(and weight)the M850i xDrive also features active rear wheel steering and active roll stability.
The 8 series will be on sale later this year. The model will open up a whole new niche in BMW’s automotive line up. While Audi doesn’t yet have an A9 coupé to go toe to toe with BMW’s new car the 8 series coupé will clash head to head with Mercedes’ S-Class coupé. Its positioning in the market will also open it up to competition from everything from a Ferrari Portofino to Bentley’s Continental GT.
